Before I get into this very escapist subject, I wanted to thank you all for your thoughtful and supportive comments on my childless cat lady essay. I was trying to make my case without coming off as parent-bashing and defensive but I didn’t need to worry because the response was overwhelmingly kind and I truly appreciate you all.
Since everything in the world right now is feeling fraught and worrisome let’s talk about something frivolous for a minute as a distraction. I have really had a turn around with Everlane, a company I used to complain about. Now I just give them all my stupid money. They’re having a F&F sale so I thought I’d mention a few things I have and really like:
The Boxy Crew in Cashmere. I have this in a striped version and bought it in heather grey when it was on clearance this summer. Now they have some new colors and a new stripe as well. This sweater is a good, modern fit. It’s soft and warm, not too boxy, and it looks great with high-waisted jeans. (I made it my whole personality back in spring!)
The Way-High® Sailor Jean. These are SO FUN and they look expensive. I find the high waist to be flattering and the cuff detail really sets them apart. They’re now under $100! (I wore them here.)
The Utility Barrel Pant. These are the perfect gateway into the barrel shape and the rosewood color is perfect - not too red or too brown and looks great paired with black. (I’m wearing them in this post..)
The Mac Coat. I don’t own this but I’ve been stalking it for weeks like the creeper I am. I might order it because I really want a more streamlined, lightweight coat that can take a little rain. No, it doesn’t have a hood but that’s what hats are for.
Feeling like taking a risk on some final sale?
My excellent Muscle Tee Midi Dress is now $39! It’s final sale but I wore this dress all over Amsterdam and it looks great dressed up or down. (I talked about it in this post.)
The Must-Have Shirt in Linen is also marked down to $59. I wore the hell out of this shirt this past summer and I don’t think you can go wrong with this one. I bought my usual size and it’s got a relaxed (but not oversized or boxy) fit. Buy this and tuck it away for next spring. Future You will be so pleased. (I’m wearing it here.)
Funny you are talking about Everlane today. They’ve been on my mind lately too & that Mac coat specifically. I basically had a whole conversation with my husband about that coat, where I offered to let him get it for me as a Christmas gift and then managed to convince him that I needed to go ahead and order it for myself now. Ha! I’m not feeling like waiting.
I have tried to share a comment about the childless cat lady post several times but kept deleting because I was writing a novel. So, let me try again. It makes me both sad and mad when women are made to feel that we “must” be mothers or our lives are not complete. I say this as a mom, to a boy I love more than life. But I don’t think every other woman has to have a child. So, I totally understood your points and was glad to read your thoughts.
I live in the South, in a very rural state, where the unplanned pregnancy rate is astronomical. And my state is a horrible and dangerous place for women to be pregnant and/or be mothers. The maternal health support system here is terrible. So, yeah, this whole situation is terribly upsetting to me. Ok, I better stop now. Your substack is a favorite in my in-box! Have a wonderful weekend!
Those Rosewood pants are pretty much the perfect color. I waited for them to be back in stock and then ordered them. Sadly they were too short in the leg and too high in the rise. So rude!
It's fun to think about a brand being your personality. This year was definitely Loft for me. Last year I would have said Anthropologie.
