I’ve been lifting heavy for a year now and it is one of the best things I’ve done. So, I’m always here for lifting stuff if you want to write about it.
Me too! I started incorporating more weight lifting into my life about a year ago and I feel great (except when I'm exhausted or sore from a hard workout). I would love to read more about lifting!
Hi there. I love this post, feel the same way, and have been doing much of the same consoling activities. I also developed a three point coping strategy when realized I couldn’t take Xanax every day for the next four years: 1. Seek out and spend time with those who share values. Go where the love is. 2 Detach from hand-wringers, second guessers, and incessant media coverage. Don’t give any of them—especially office holding/seeking nut-wings—access to the best part of our beautiful brains. 3. Practice micro citizenship. Put energy into the betterment our own life and the lives of those we hold dear.
This is so good! I deleted my social media apps at 3 AM that night (haven’t canceled the accounts yet, but have managed to avoid them without the easy access). I’ve read I don’t know how many books since then, including the entire Miss Marple catalogue. I also don’t want to see the post mortems, especially any blaming Harris or Walz. I’m starting to feel a little better, but the nausea/rage/disbelief gets through on occasion (my god, the cabinet picks and Musk opinions). I recently joined Bluesky and am actually enjoying it. I found some favorites from the old Twitter days, and it is extremely satisfying to block the trolls.
I would love to hear more about weightlifting! I have a peloton, run (not enough), and use light weights but at 52, things don’t work the way they used to.
I am grateful for your thoughtful, beautifully written posts and for this community. Oh, and my favorite muppet is Janice.
All so relatable. Also, I am here to talk lifting heavy shit. I started doing it a bit over a year ago, and it made a huge difference in so many ways about how I feel. I am borderline evangelical about it. 😂
This rang lots of bells with me! My Instagram is mostly wild and domesticated animals, National parks, and Lottie from the Great British Bake Off swearing in her kitchen. And thanks for the nudge about weightlifting. I swim regularly, and walk most places, but I know that isn't enough for my aging bones. My mother had osteoporosis and I need to watch out for that. A good goal for 2025!
PS My favorite Muppet is Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his human avatar, John Hodgeman.
So I am 63 and lift heavy (4-5 days a week). I still deadlift and squat and do all of the free weight things. I am the only one of my friends that are not taking osteoporosis meds and my bone density is great. I also do not have the bat wings that some have but that may just be genetics. Bottom line is it is good for you and keeps me sane so will keep it up and I urge all older women to try it as you never know - you may like it!
Thanks for this post and for all of your writing. I have gotten so many good ideas from you over the years and always appreciate hearing your perspective. So glad that you have continued with the post-blog writing!
Love this and can totally relate. I live/work in politics and public policy in Washington DC and I’m giving my brain a rest right now so I can fight like hell in January (and beyond) against his assault on democracy and decency. I know I have to pick the things that matter most to me because there is going to be A LOT
Hi, currently listening to Meryl Streep narrating Tom Lake and loving it!
My dumb little walks are amazing since I have a treadmill and a tablet and give myself full permission to watch whatever ridiculous brain rot I want. Highly recommend.
About the lifting - I am here for any and all talk about that! I started probably 10 years ago (I’m 50 now), mostly in a small-group format but for the last year adding a personal trainer 2x/week who does a lot of balance and functional work (with the heavy weights, not instead of) - it’s a brain break (you have to fully concentrate or your form will suffer and you’ll get injured), helps prevent osteoporosis, keeps me at a size I’m happy with, and keeps me from feeling frail and old. Honestly it’s a linchpin of my mental health as well as physical.

Same! I want to tell every fellow middle aged lady. Such a game changer.

ohhhhh I did NOT wanna hear any “takes” - I cut it all out, just like you did.

Love this 🤍
I’ve been trying to do a lot of these things lately too. Glad to know we aren’t alone!
And keep posting your progress!
