Ah, fall. The season everyone else loves has arrived with its glorious leaves and 40 degree temperature fluctuations. Yay, I guess. I’m not as much of a hater as I used to be but fall is just such a bad boyfriend. Like it starts off all crisp and colorful and the next thing you know it’s dark at 4pm and you’re skating on rotting wet leaves. With the aim of staying positive, here are some things I really love that are helping me lean into the season:
Candle Hoarders, This is for you
This is so stupid but I really love LAFCO candles (specifically this one for fall which they discontinued) and they come in beautiful blown glass containers which I always intend on reusing like a good human. Instead, I carefully put my dead candle in my dead candle hoarder cabinet with the other useless dead pretty candles. It’s embarrassing at this point how many of these I have. So, when I found out that candle warmer lamps were a thing I immediately bought one so I could get the remaining delicious smell out of my hoard of pricy wax stumps. I bought this one and YOU GUYS. It works like magic! It’s a cozy edition to my WFH office and I can get some extra hours of scent from my expensive candles without setting the house on fire.
This GBBS Podcast I Love
Is it just me or is this season of The Great British Baking Show proving to be one of the best? I honestly don’t know how they do it but every year Big Bake seems to find the twelve most likable people in the UK. I look forward to it every fall and also look forward to listening to a new season of On Your Marks, Get Set, Bake! This is a short and fun recap podcast from the women who created my other favorite podcast This Is Joy & Claire, which is currently on hiatus. Anyway, if you love Bake, add this podcast to your list. It’s a good time.
My Dry Skin Secret Weapon
Tis the season where we all turn into dried little husks. I have a new secret weapon against dry skin, though. My friend Kate recommended Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil to me and it’s so good that I’ve been completely ignoring my usual favorite body wash. The Bioderma shower oils is very gentle and has a subtle fragrance that I find to be very French apothecary. (“Claire, it’s French.”) The best part - its not wildly expensive and is usually discounted on Amazon but also available at Target. For body lotion, I still haven’t found anything I like as much as plain old Aveeno and the combo is keeping me nicely un-lizardy.
That No Booze Buzz
For a variety of middle-aged reasons I’ve been trying to drink less alcohol and around the same time I decided to do this, I found out about Earlybird CBD Gummies. Y’all, these are amazing. They contain less than 0.3 % THC so you get a really gentle buzz without losing your ability to butter rolls.1 One of these gummies gives me a lovely relaxed feeling and I sleep like a baby. No hangover! They’re currently offering 20% off with code BOO. (Or if you’re reading this after the code expires, use my link for 15% off.) I recommend the watermelon flavor.
That’s it for me. Where are my meh about fall people? Tell me what’s getting you through it.
Once upon a time at a friend weekend gathering, I accidentally got so high I literally couldn’t contribute to dinner prep and had to go lay down instead.
Ha, I added that candle warmer to my cart so fast! I find that actual candle smoke bothers my asthma these days, so I have a lot of half burned candles sitting around. Bonus, it's a lamp! I love a little glow in every room.
My SAD kicks in starting in early September and lifts once we start getting more light in January. The darkness is so hard for me. Warm light and candles that smell good, lots of warm baths and lotions help. I also got an electric kettle and have a wide variety of herbal teas. I am going to look for that shower oil! I have not kept with GBBS and feel like I am really missing out!
