On this, the 800th day of January, I am not going to talk about the woes of the month, of which I have many. Other than my birthday and a stretch of nice weather (now over) it’s been fucking dreadful. I’m not ready to talk about any of it so instead I’m going to show you what I’ve been wearing for the last month:
Oh, this one makes me happy. I’m wearing my Nili Lotan Shon jeans, my Kule striped tee (seriously worth it, I’m sorry) and the same good Madewell belt that I am probably wearing in every outfit photo. I want this one too. I’m also wearing my secondhand Gucci loafers that I love beyond all reason.
Over all of this I wore my little bomber jacket and basically wore it like it was a cardigan all day. It’s stretchy and sharp and I’m glad I bought it.
This is my beloved striped Everlane sweater that was my whole personality last winter. It’s still going strong. My Stovepipe jeans were a very discounted Madewell purchase and they’re… fine. I don’t love them but they’re fine. I’m wearing bright red socks because:
Converse! I think this is real cute and I don’t even care if I look like an idiot. I also don’t know why these particular photos suck so bad, but for some reason y’all never complain.
The Shon jeans strike again. I wore this out for my fancy birthday dinner in Portland and felt pretty nice. My sweater is this one from Quince. I’m wearing that belt again and an old Dean Davidson tassel necklace that is still a favorite. My boots are Madewell and they’re old-old.
This outfit contains the two things I said I didn’t return last month - my Rag & Bone Slade blazer and my AYR Secret Sauce jeans. And the belt. I’ve worn these jeans quite a lot since I got them. They’re made of super soft denim with a decent wide leg that doesn’t leave you feeling like you’re flapping as you walk. The Slade blazer is great - soft and light and as comfortable as a cardigan, I promise. My shoes are Donald Pliner Tandi Oxfords and were a secondhand purchase (via Friend of the Substack: she of the Gucci loafers) and they are great! I love it when my friends have better taste than me and email me all “you might like these.” I do like them:
If you’re feeling very JANUARY perhaps what you need is a shiny pair of platform oxfords? Just a suggestion. (Note: sadly the pair I have seem to be sold out everywhere but Cole Haan makes a very cute version.)
Okay, this is a story for another post, but you might be wondering how I did with my goal to not buy things in January. My answer: Shh, nobody asked you. Just kidding, I did POORLY, OKAY. But, the things I bought were all secondhand and I used Poshmark funds to buy them so it’s really just trading. Anyway, did I buy another pair of jeans because none of my actual non-denim pants fit me right now? Yes, yes I did. These are an old-old pair of Madewell Slim Boyjeans (remember those?) that are great. I always loved this style for it’s good slouchy-but-slim fit. I’m wearing them with my other boxy Everlane sweater and a pair of odd Everlane Chelsea boots that I’m not sure I’m pulling off but I love them? I love them. Also, the belt.
And because I always forget to add a bag, I added a bag. This is my favorite Clare V bag - the woven Moyen messenger. It always looks cool, it’s not heavy and it holds everything. 10/10, no notes.
I think we should do whatever makes us happy in January and save the reform for February. Which is at least shorter. I bought a pair of shiny Donald Pliner monk strap shoes last year and I love them. I also love your Converse sneakers, which are the energy we need in this world!
You are absolutely pulling off those Chelsea boots and simultaneously making me want a pair. I have an almost identical outfit to your barrel jeans with the black Quince sweater except my sweater is gray and I love it so much because it feels very me. One of our fashion professors complimented my barrel jeans recently and I felt very smug (and secretly very pleased). (Why don't I have the black version of the Quince sweater? I do not know. Must remedy).
All of these looks are fab. <3
