I remember last summer, arguing with my mother who seemed to think that my moving back east meant I should be available to her at all times. When I pointed out that I was busy trying desperately to find a job and she responded with “Well, it will probably take you a year to find one.” I remember being irritated that she had so little faith in my abilities. It’s really annoying when she’s right, but this time she was right. My final day at my old job last year was July 11th and I start my new job on July 6th.

I honestly wish I’d known I’d have a year off because I might have tried to have more fun with it, but mostly I was anxious about not working, stressed out about my mother’s situation and feeling quite isolated in a small town where I had no friends.
